Steel vs Alloy Wheels

steel vs alloy wheels

Choosing the right wheels for your vehicle is very important. There are mainly two categories of wheels that you can choose from; alloy and steel.

Alloy Wheels

Alloy wheels are made out of aluminium and nickel metals that are poured into a mold of the wheel’s shape. They are strong, lightweight, withstand heat well, and stylish making them suitable for sedan cars, 4WDs and high performance vehicles. Alloy wheels are more attractive than steel wheels due to the freedom of customization, as there are many different spoke styles, finishes, and sizes to choose from. If you are looking for a balance between performance, comfort, cost, and gas efficiency alloy wheels are the right choice for you.

However, even though alloy wheels are great for high performance driving, they are more expensive and less durable than steel wheels. Alloy wheels can get impacted on the road due to potholes, curbs, and other road hazards which can cause the wheel to bend or even crack. Due to the large variety of sizes, the wheels are more easily prone to cosmetic damage on the road.

Alloy wheels are the standard and most common wheels used for most cars today due to their stylish and high performance look. Even though they are more expensive than steel wheels, the majority of the market’s wheels are alloy wheels which results in a large range of selection and greater options.

Steel Wheels

Steel wheels are made with an alloy of iron and carbon which is pressed and welded into the shape of a wheel. They are significantly heavier than alloy wheels but more durable and can be easily repaired. These wheels are perfect for drivers looking for a cheaper and more durable option, especially for off-road trucks and more powerful vehicles. Steel wheels are nearly impossible to crack and bend which means that they are very good for off-roading, winter conditions, and heavy duty driving. They are also more resistant to damage from gravel, brake dust, and sand.

The wheels may be heavier than alloy wheels which will dampen agility, acceleration, and fuel efficiency. There are not many styles and finishes available for steel wheels in the market which limits the range of selection. Additionally, steel wheels are limited in size as the majority are made in 16’ or less. This means that steel wheels will not be able to be installed on high performance vehicles.

Are Alloy Wheels Better Than Steel?

Overall, steel wheels are cheap, durable, and suitable for any type of driving on the road. Steel wheels will keep your car on the road during all seasons and will reduce the amount of shocks and bumps on the road while driving.

On the other hand, Alloy wheels are more suitable for high performance, agility, and stylish look. They are offered in a variety of styles, sizes, widths, finishes and can be fitted on both stock and modified cars, Jeeps, SUV’s and 4×4 off-road trucks.

Final Say

Alloy wheels have been dominating the automotive industry in recent years. They offer performance advantages over steel wheels as they are several kilograms lighter – meaning alloy wheels provide quicker acceleration and faster stopping. Also, in extreme driving conditions, alloy wheels are able to better dissipate away heat from brake components compared with steel wheels.
